Turbo inter-cooler pipe would be my best guess as the Turbo only starts getting up to speed above 1500 rpm

on a Frontera TDi I had it had a tiny split in the pipe (you had to look hard to see it, take it off and give it a good wash in soapy water) and that sounded like a tornado when you started to crank the beast, like yours nothing on tick over or revving it at the stop but as you pulled off WOOSH !!!

A quick fix with super-glue and electrical tape and it was really quiet (it was leaking from day 1) and held till I could get a replacement pipe as it had stress cracks all over !!

Ive had the car on the ramps listening underneath but cant hear it whilst the car is stationary, checked intercooler pipes and all seems ok, im wandering if the intercooler itself is damaged as the car was in front end smash a few months back and although its been repaired the cars made this noise since then

I think its quite normal to hear a hiss when accellerating hard between about 1900-2500rpm. This I think is just the turbo pumping at max volume. If you had a significant leak anywhere in the boost pipework you would invariably suffer from "limp home" episodes.

I think also partly blocked EGR valves can hiss quite a bit.

have used the boost leak tester connecting it to the turbo but there are no leaks on that side of things so i,m now looking at the air intake, i,ve noticed the airbox lid doesn,t seem to be closed down firmly on the filter even though the screws are all tight, is it possible this could be warped somehow ?

It hooks on the left, screws on the right so make sure its hooked it fully. I can't see it warping myself as its thick plastic but its possible the screw threads have gone as they are only plastic and if over-tightened will strip.
